A-ha! It looks like Esperanza was trapped under a book in Wizard’s tower. That leaves Hummus the Dragon as the culprit. Indeed, he was seen flying towards the mountains. On closer inspection, his hoard in the mountains can be seen on one of Capricious D’s TV monitors. Motive? That’s what dragons do. The Emerald Mushroom has been safely returned to the denizens of the Shiitake Forest. Case solved.

Merlin looked suspicious enough, sneaking around in the Natural History Museum and breaking Ming vases like that, but he did not pilfer the Emerald Mushroom.

Actually the Merlin of Arthurian legend stuck in the body of a cat until Wizard can figure out how to reverse the spell...
No one saw hide nor hair of that cat all day, though there was evidence he had been around, e.g. broken Ming vase. Mischief.

How I Know Wizard
I left for university in Mellowopolis as a young man. There I was befriended by Wizard, who was guest lecturing on astrophysics.
Eventually, I became special correspondent for the Stone Baked Times. Two years later I was commissioned by the paper to search through space and time to locate Wizard, of whom little had been heard since my college days, when he had set off to search for the source of the force that holds up the Floating Islands.

Now Wizard is my good friend and mentor. He claims he was preparing a fireworks display, but he is working on something more up there in that tower. I must look into this.
Melody did not take the Emerald Mushroom.
